The Whanki Museum’s special exhibition “WHANKI’S GRAND TOUR ‘Paris Correspondence’” presents KIM Whanki‘s four years of experience and works in Paris with the ‘new collections’ of the museum.
On the “Grand Tour” to Paris in 1956, KIM Whanki had opportunity to self–examine on his identity and the fundamental of arts. In Paris and other places in Europe, he encounters the masters of modern art in person and realizes there he must contain songs within the essence of art and sole uniqueness above all else. On the other side of the globe, he establishes his identity of art from pottery and traditional objects, and formative language tirelessly created in convergence of Korean traditions and national culture such as jars, plum blossoms, deer, birds, and mountain was completed with the art philosophy of “poetic spirit.”
